Guy Strazz Bio

Guy Strazz is a master guitarist and composer who has performed internationally at festivals in Australia, Europe, Africa, India, Indonesia and Japan such as: Jazz Yatra (India), Jakarta Jazz, Perth and Adelaide Arts Festivals, Clusone Jazz Festival (Italy), Japan World Expo, the Sydney Opera House, Melbourne and Wangaratta Jazz Festivals, and the Adelaide International Guitar Festival.

His work navigates cross-cultural music, including jazz, Afro-Brazilian music, and Indian classical music. He is a Fellow of the Australia Arts Council, having been awarder the Music Fellowship 2001-2003 to compose, perform and research in America Europe, and India.

 

He has worked with artists such as Dale Barlow, Matt McMahon, Don Burrows, Casey Bennetto and Neil Armfield, Sandy Evans, Greg Shehan, Ashok Roy and Sandip Chatterjee. He has crossed paths and played with international guitarists such as Martin Taylor, Mike Stern, Vishwa M. Bhatt, Slava Grigoryan, Mark Johns and George Golla, Tommy Emmanuel, and the late jazz legend Pat Martino.  

His albums, released on labels such as ABC Jazz, Birdland, and Underscore Records, feature many of his original compositions. His more recent projects include Great Guitars with Mark Johns, and Afrotonic with drummer David Jones.

Recognition includes an Australian Performing Rights Association (APRA) as wellas three Nominations, an Australian Independent Recording (AIR) Nomination 2008; a USA Indie Acoustic Project Nomination and a Fellowship form the Australia Arts Council. His music has been released on labels such as ABC, Tall Poppies, Underscore, Birdland, and Rufus.

Guy holds PhD (MQRF Scholarship), an M.A. (UWS) and other music degrees. He currently teaches composition and musicology at Avondale University and he is guitar head of program at the Central Coast Conservatorium of Music. He has taught at University of NSW, Macquarie University, NAISDA, Sydney University and Sydney Conservatorium of Music.
