        Sandip Chatterjee

           Santoor and Composer

The faces of the audience lit up with joy at the soothing, melodious, spiritual musical virtuosity of Sandip.

– Arab News, Jeddah: Habib Shaikh

Sandip Chatterjee is a disciple of Pandit Tarun Bhattacharya and vocal master Pandit Ajoy Chakraborty.  An ‘A Grade’ Artiste of Song and Drama division (Government of India), Sandip is a recipient of several awards including Best Hindustani Classical Instrumentalist (All India Music and Dance Competition, 1986). President of India Award – First Position Hindustani classical instrumentalist (All India Radio, 1990). Jadubhatta Puraskar Award (1990), and “Sangeet Ratna Award” (Kolkata (2011).   His musical palette incorporates two Gharanas at the same time – Maihar and Patiala classical schools. His experimental approach on the santoor employs a mallet in the right hand while the left hand plucks the chikari (drone) strings to play the Alap, Jod and Jhala parts of bandish (a fixed composition within raga), thereby creating a contrasting resonance to the mallet-struck strings. Sandip has been extensively performing at many music festivals and concerts all around the world. He has released numerous CDs and has worked with renowned music directors such as A.R.Rehman, Jatin Lalit, Gulshan Kumar, Rabindra Jain, and Pt.V.Balsara.   Beyond Hindustani classical music, Sandip has collaborated across genres in jazz, rock, Latin and contemporary music with renowned musicians. These include Shanti (Claudio Gigilio and Fulvio Farkas); Emotion, (Elin Larsson); and Feelings (Giuliano Mondarelli).  His collaboration with guitarist Guy Strazz – Calcutta Express – received  a nomination by the Indo Acoustic Project (USA) for Best CD of 2006 Award in the Global Beat Music category. official website
